Cleaned the garage. Bought a new pitchfork and have been using it to poke the neighbours. Shaved parts of my body you don't want to know about, just to try it on for size. Went deer hunting and froze my gonads off. I didn't get any deer, but I did have some time to myself in the cabin to touch myself improperly while watching Girlfight.
This update was for James Franco. :-*

Despite almost being late because I was attacked by wild dogs, the BBQ is happening right now, as we speak. IM me on Weird Bald Guy for an invite. Be prepared to roleplay and act like dorks because I know that's what I'm doing.

7:51 pm - omfg, the beach bbq
|
It has been two years since the first OMG WTF BBQ and in celebration of this, and summer, and the rejuvenation of Lionel Ritchie's career, I am holding another one. First it was the OMG WTF BBQ, then the Yeehaw BBQ (with a country theme and mechanical bull), another one with a name I can't remember and now I present you with the Beach BBQ. Located at my summer home on the shores of polluted Lake Ontario, there is something for everyone.
The date for this is Sunday, August 15 at 3 p.m. EST. How long it will last, I cannot say. Some last two hours and one lasted all night. It's not unusual for spontaneous oral sex to happen, just as a warning. Safety first, kids. Usually there's some good eating, good drinking and good swimming.
Even though I say it's on the shores of Lake Ontario, in the past, this property is magical, located on a cloud in the sky so that wherever your character is, he or she can attend. This is illegal in many RPG's, but here at MBP, we are untrained ruffians who don't know any better. If it ends up being integral to your storyline, make it in your general location and no one will correct you. This is a geographical freebie in the name of good time interaction and community bonding. It will be on AIM in an appropriately named chat room. Asterisky roleplaying is not only encouraged, but mandatory. If you're not going to roleplay along with us and are just going to sit there and chat aimlessly, make another chat room for that. This will be a specific chat room especially for this party. Consider this must_be_asterisks. In the past, these parties have proven to be beneficial. Storylines have evolved from them, and it's handy to incorporate into your own, and it's also being held with new people in mind so your character can come and actually meet other people face to face and make some friends.
Details of my summer mansion and surroundings behind the cut tag.

2:26 pm - a lil' crossposting
|
It's occurred to me time and time again that there should be some kind of system here where new people are matched up and become friends with people who have been here awhile. Those of us who have been here awhile forget what a weird and kind of scary place this can be, and how much time can be spent banging your head against the wall trying to find people to talk to you. We love new people, right? We want them to stay and be comfortable.
Therefore, I bring you....
mbpfriendlink
Check it out. See what you think. If it appeals to you, please use it. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Please spread the word and let me know if you're interested in getting involved. Woot!

I stole this icon from someone but it was too good. I had to do it. I wish there was a way to put my American Gothic head on it.
I don't know who just paid for my account but goddamn, thank you. When I said I needed more icons, I meant I needed to make some, but this is great. Thank you!
Thank you tanithbelbin for helping sort out our figure skater situation.

6:17 pm - You've got your peanut butter in my chocolate
|
I was wondering if someone who is either a hockey player or knowledgeable about hockey could help me out. On the form to fill out for the list of characters (which you should fill out if you're not on the list, by the way), I didn't have anything about athletes saying what sport they're involved in, yet we have a separate category for hockey players. Doh. Trial and error, kids. Trial and error. Some people specified when they filled it out, but I suspect I have hockey players in with "other athletes." I was wondering if one of you could take a look at this page and tell me if there are any hockey players in with the other athletes and I'll put them in the right category.
Also, since our figure skaters breed like rabbits, I thought it might be good to have a separate category for figure skaters too. If there are any figure skaters out there who wouldn't mind having a look and pointing out who the figure skaters are, I would share my first million with you. That's an empty promise, of course, because I will never have a million dollars, but it's the thought that counts.
I changed the submit page so it asks people to specify their sport but it's the people who are there now who are all jumbled. I would love to be able to sort them myself but my idea of a sport is drinking beer through a funnel.
Do we have a current Hilary Duff? What about Julianne Moore? And I never thought I'd find myself asking this, but do we have any Spy Kids?

Here's one for your "whoa" category.
While uploading the site to our new pop-up-free web space that I keep talking about, I did a count of the journals we have listed. Some are inactive but many have not been added yet, so it's a good average. There are 276 actors, 222 athletes, 183 from various categories (models, directors, royalty, etc.) and 474 musicians. If my math is right, which it never is, that's 1,155 active journals. And you say you have nothing to do around here.
Unfortunately, 1,076 of those are played by the same 10 people. I kid. All cynicism aside though, let's say everyone here on average had 10 journals, which is highly unlikely and if you do then I have no idea how the hell you go about doing that. That still means there is a very bare minimum of 110 people playing this game. That is really cool.

I've never made a quiz before so I thought I'd try it.
 You are very accurate.
How accurate is your MBP character? brought to you by Quizilla
Please note that the quiz is a joke. If I list something as being inaccurate that you have done, such as gay marriage, don't freak out on me. I'm sure you're perfectly fine. I was just amusing myself. *amuses self some more*

2:42 pm - Lotion
|
Hello, lovers.
Just as a reminder, please make sure you have the disclaimer link on each and every one of your entries. This can be achieved by clicking that link and following the instructions.
There are no exceptions. If you have one of the new S2 styles and it makes the link not show up on your entries, you have to get rid of the style and switch back to one of the old ones, or manually put a link somewhere on each and every one of your entries. Make it large and as plain as possible. You must also have something in your user info saying that you are not the real person.
This is the only thing that will keep your journal from being suspended and you losing all of your writing. Even with the code, it's not fool proof.
Do not contact LJ and try to negotiate with them about having the disclaimer. Don't get someone's journal suspended because you're mad at them. Add the code, fly low to the ground and quietly do your thing. At least that's my humble opinion.
:-*
This is really just a reminder. Make sure you have the disclaimer code on your journal. Make sure your friends have the disclaimer code on their journals. Having the code is the new deleting, updating and unfriending, as well as the new pink and the new Macarena.
I also didn't want to reach six weeks for whatever reason, so I'll talk about what I'm up to. I got a new barbecue for the back yard. Many of you celebs will remember my barbecue, which was often tended to by mrkilborn. Julio the house boy spent the summer cleaning the pool in his very small Speedo that gave him a very nice profile. I then had him rub suntan lotion on my nether regions. Lotion becomes increasingly important when you're 81 years old. I have lotion for areas we won't even talk about. Speaking of that, I had a barbecue last week attended by Bea Arthur, the second Adam Sandler and John Travolta's body double in "Broken Arrow." Omg, it was so fun!

Awhile ago, I suggested having a small group of people doing the MBP moderating thing instead of one person. It makes it fairer and it means things get done quicker, in theory. It's just cooler all around, and everyone who commented seemed to agree. Also, people would use their IC names so there isn't the illusion of hiding or of digging out the moderator's identity or any of that fun stuff.
So I went to a few people I thought would do well. I went to people who know the game really well, who have had as few OOC dramas as possible, people I thought were fair and knowledgeable and trustworthy, and after a couple of weeks worth of work we've come up with a nice little group. It is:
valo
sliminem
drew_barrymore
davegenn
johnrzeznik
Those are the new moderators of everything. If you need something, go to one of them. They'll be adding, subtracting, multiplying, updating, groping and just doing all general admin duties previously done by myself. They have one central e-mail address, which is the following:
reaching_mbp@yahoo.com
If you need anything, or have any questions, mail that address, or go to one of the above names. Each of them have individual things they're good at and people they hang out with. The idea is to get people who will do the shit and not be jerks about it, and I'm confident that this group is cool.
I know there are going to be people who complain about who I picked. I don't know them all OOC. I haven't roleplayed with all of them. We're all in this game to have a good time. I just want it to be as fun as possible, and I think we all want that. Any time someone else has taken over the moderating duties, people have made the person's life difficult here. The community deterioriates, people start bitching at one another, and it's just a general shitstorm.
Let's not do that this time. Let's make this thing work and remember that there are actual people behind these names. We're all out there doing the exact same thing, no one is profiting from this (aside from the odd $5 paid account) and it's not supposed to be a huge political thing, just a good time. Yeehaw. They'll listen to what everyone has to say and I really think this is an exciting time. I think if we all contribute then this can rock.
I mentioned in my last entry about a newbie chat. The fabulously unsigned amanda_latona is setting it up, so watch either MBP or her journal for more information on that. It's basically a chat for new people to get to know other people and give everyone a chance to convene, particularly people who don't know anyone yet. I think it'll go a long way toward preventing new people from standing there scratching their heads going "um, wtf?"
Peace out, folks.

I thought to do something interesting, I'd advertise MBP in a couple of those RPG ads communities on LJ, Blurty, etc. to get some new blood, because we like new blood around here, yes? I think there are people who would like to join and haven't because there's a stigma that "everyone is taken." That's really not true, and to demonstrate, when I posted, I was going to include a list of desirable characters who are not taken in this game. Below is the list. If you see someone who is taken on here, please let me know. Otherwise I'm basically inviting people to come and play one of them. Also, if you can think of an open role that would grab someone's attention and make them say "oooh," let me know and I'll include it. We're going for big names here, or names that will appeal to a certain fandom or niche.
Pink (we've had about 30 but never one that stuck) Brandon Boyd (hasn't updated in 10 weeks) Ashley Angel and Dan Miller of O-Town Alyson Hannigan (?) Jason Wade BBMak Keri Russell Stephan Jenkins Clea DuVall Matt LeBlanc Winona Ryder Liz Hurley Demi Moore Chyler Leigh Lucy Liu Holly Valance Ryan Seacreast Rachel Leigh Cook Jason Biggs Chris Klein Halle Berry Monica Keena Meredith Monroe Denise Richards Casey Affleck
Charlie Hunnam nevermind James Iha and other APC members (but we have a Twiggy) Scott Foley Nicholas Brendon Amy Acker Alexis Denisof Anthony Stewart Head Adam Brody
Do we have a Mena Suvari?
If you see someone on that list that is taken, yell at me because I am so far from knowing everything it's not even funny.
Help wanted, apply within:
I was also thinking it would be fun if we had more weekly chat events and things that would bring everyone together and get them interacting, especially for people sitting there without storylines. That's what the OMG WTF BBQs were good for, I think. I really think we should have a welcome_wagon sponsored Newbie Chat, where new people or people who are just feeling new can get in one room. helpinghand told me that a couple were held but it's hard to keep them going. Would anyone be willing to maybe help with this and host a weekly chat or something? I'm sure myself and the Helping Hand woman and whoever else will help promote it. We just need someone to make the chat and kind of keep it going. Would anyone be willing to do this? If you are, drop me a line at notfrick@hotmail.com or something, or let helpinghand know. Yeehaw.

The subject line of this post is a little more dramatic than it needs to be, but when have any of us ever shied away from a bit o' melodrama? Besides, it reminds me of Robert Downey Jr. running around a castle with an ostrich feather covering his cockenballs. :D
A lot of shit has happened in this community lately. People have been exposed, exploded, imploded, whiny, argumentative and just generally not conducive to a very creative environment. This perhaps includes all of us. I see Group A not liking Group B, Group B thinking Group C is out to get them, etc. I think we're all guilty of this, including myself, and it seems like we all have to take a step back and look at the big picture.
Probably one of the most overused phrases around here is this is a game! Variants: stop taking it so seriously, it's only a game! or it's just a game! I think there can be a tendency sometimes though to forget exactly what that word means. Game. It could be argued that this is in fact much more than a game. It's now a social structure, a wee little universe where people meet OOC and get married and whatnot, but it seems to me, in my humble opinion, that at the heart of it, it has to remain just a game. If you start trying to factor in the other elements, it gets muddled and confused, and no one knows where they're going. It seems to me that at the very centre of it, it has to remain what it was designed to be, which is a bunch of people staying IC and having silly fun, or everything else collapses, you know what I mean? This should not be an upsetting experience. It should be as fun as possible for everyone involved.
People will say "this sucks!" and grumble about how crazy everyone else is. I am also bad for this and freely admit that. But from now on, my attitude is going to change. Bitching never makes for pleasant fun and games, and not only that, every six months there is a new crisis in this thing. Every six months seems like the end of the world, and people lament that it's not the way it used to be. Well, how about we make it what we want it to be? We could stop our mumbling about how other people suck and maybe take the bull by the horns and be the change we want to see in it, if ya know what I mean. Like I said, this will absolutely include me, and seeing as I'm everyone, we're all set. ;)
One of the first things that needs to be done, in my mind, is that the system of administration/moderation/whatyamahcallit needs to be looked at. It's no one individual or group that makes it so. I just think it's outdated. See, for y'all who are new here, this community was the brainchild of the person playing Lance Bass. Lance came up with the idea, built it from the ground up and within a few months, it had exploded. It got to be way more of a commitment than had ever been appropriate for his time or interest, so he handed the reins to me. I was Brian Littrell at the time and that was the name I used to be the moderator.
Time went on though, and I got tired of Brian. You can only jive in the Kentucky boy band member with two Chihuahuas and a foxy wife world for so long before a person needs to branch out a little. I gave Brian to a new owner, who still has him today, but I still wanted to be moderator. However, I didn't want people to know who my other character was, nor did I feel I should have to let everyone know who it was, and besides, his nature just wasn't suitable for that kind of thing anyway. The MBP account to moderate it has always been this one, Craven Moorehead, so I decided to make Craven the moderator and give him a silly little personality and pretend he was the guy in Grant Wood's American Gothic painting. The intent of the Craven Moorehead/Mona Moore set up was never to be secretive or spark rumours about who we played.
This thing has gotten too big and too contentious for it, I feel. It's too much for one person to take the brunt of it. In approaching new people to do it, seeing as Mona is resigning and been thinking about it for awhile, the response has been similar - "do I look insane to you?" Everyone likes the idea of doing a little something for the community but no one wants to take the brunt of the other things that go with it. And no one should really have to.
I propose a small group of people moderating it. I think three or four would do the trick, and they would do it from their character names so there would be no speculation and it would add a new level of transparency. Other RPG's, which coincidentally sprung from the idea of this one, are moderated in such a way. Perhaps it's time for us to take a page from them rather than them blatantly ripping us off. (ahem :-P) About three people moderating it, and forum for everyone to state their opinions, and an end to the illusion that it's one person doing everything.
If you're reading this, please let me know your thoughts on it. It would be nice to get the community aspect of this going more and maybe we can all work together to come up with a new format that works for everyone. So let's have a pow wow. *pokes you all with a stick*
Edit: I'm posting something in must_be_pop in regards to making the disclaimer link work with the component style.

9:45 am - OMG IT'S THE BUBBLES SDHSREWIRHKFH
|
The second annual Must Be Pop Bubble Awards are happening. The final nominations have been tallied, and now it's time to vote. Is this exciting shit or what? The nominations were announced by Craig and Mona last night in an AIM ceremony wherein Mona had an after sex glow inspired by...ahem...no one.... (Hey, just because we're not married doesn't mean she has to stop putting out.)
Details of said event can be found in the journal of mona_moore, and Craig has been periodically posting information in must_be_pop. These awards are designed to be something fun to do on AIM that the entire community can get involved in, regardless of their clique or their differences. It's supposed to be a fun thing everyone can participate in that's in the spirit of the game. I can tell you from experience that an unreal amount of work goes into making them happen. If anyone out there is listening, please do not give the organizers a hard time. Like I said, it's all good intentions and trying to pass around good vibes. Just keep in mind that it's for fun and it's inclusive and if you want to get involved in any way, hey, just let us know and we'd love to have your sexy ass around.
I imagine we'll be lining up presenters again and all that fun shite. Anyway, now is your chance to vote. Vote for who you think does the best job and have fun with it. It's over yonder at mbp_academy.
By the way, since people have been asking me, "sportsmanlike" means who plays fair and includes other people and helps them get involved in the game. It's not who is the best shot putter.
Dictionary definition:
sportsmanship n : fairness in following the rules of the game

8:01 pm - Then I saw this gangster and I was like "yo, motherfucker, wheeee!"
|
I know any time I pop up these days, I'm bitching about something, but I'm going to do that again. Bare with me, y'all.
You know, of the past 30 or so posts in must_be_pop, six of them have been about how the post was more than one line. Take another look, and of those 30, see how many are making fun of someone. All you people do is bitch about how you don't like it here, and then you shit in your own drinking water. Do you want this all to cave? Good. Keep it up. You're doing a brilliant job of destroying the thing you spend hours of your life on.
It is not the Gestapo. The community posting rules are here. Do you remember? Many of you who are bitching were present when we drew up the fucking rules. Many of you helped us come up with them. And many of you who are doing the "THIS IS MORE THAN ONE LINE" were in the fucking chat room and were in favour of the one line thing! The whole "we hope you don't make one liners" thing has been listed on that page since it was put up God knows how long ago, linked to 100 times, and not once has anyone complained. It was up there as a suggestion, and unless I'm mistaken, that is still what it is. I'm not sure, but either way, I really can't believe it makes that much of a difference to what you're doing here. Other than that, the "rules" there are exactly the same as they have been for a year. What is the enormous deal about it now? If someone could answer this, I would truly and honestly like to know. Maybe back then, people didn't think about it applying to them, or they thought of it applying to someone they didn't like. Now it's the thing to bitch about du jour. We really should rename this place must_be_sheep sometimes.
People get pissed off when nothing is enforced, and then pissed off when it is. What do you want from being here? What is this for? Whatever happened to creating a fictional character, giving him motivation and then roleplaying him? Whatever happened to the game part of this? It reads like an OOC community where people get pissed off for being censored. This is not a place to post whatever the hell you feel like posting. This is a game. We are here for a specific purpose, aren't we? And what happens when we're not? And if this is not your specific purpose, then why are you even here and worrying about this shit in the first place? Why not join a random OOC LJ community where you can be yourself, post one liners, talk to your friends and not put forth the effort?
I can only assume it's because you enjoy the IC parts of it. I assume it's because you enjoy the game. I think it's still a game. Then again, I'm naive. If you do enjoy the IC part of it though, the part of writing fiction and being in the wonderful world of make believe, then lead by example in maintaining the reason it's here in the first place. Be calculated, be analytical, think about things before you do them and for the love of God, write something instead of arguing and being snarky about petty little things. Tell a story that we want to read and be involved in rather than making petty little posts that irritate people. This goes for everyone, including myself.
And that's all I wanted to say. Sorry for the tangent. I still love most of you insane amounts and I still see really creative people around here who make it worth it. I think I just need to go take my frustration out on the cows.
I would also like to thank the must_be_rawr folks for my nomination of biggest swankster. I was just thinking about how swanky I am.
Special cherry-flavored edit: It appears i did win swankiest. This is my acceptance speech. Thank you for all the swanky people who have made this possible. Thank you to my ma and pa, who sent me to a one room school house for some learnin' back in the day. Thank you to my ex wife Mona for encouraging the swank and buying me polyester suits whenever she saw one on sale, and thank you to everyone who has never been thanked in a speech before.
